New depot at Ballyogan for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council
Architects: Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Architects Department with Bucholz McEvoy Architects
The new Depot facility at Ballyogan is a significant investment by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council that provides an integrated facility for Council services in the field of Maintenance and Environmental Services. It comprises a three storey office building together with a high bay utility warehouse and ancillary yards.
The project seeks to develop a new relationship between the built suburban area, its rural hinterland and the new landscape in between that has been created by the remediation of the former landfill. The project also seeks to create a civic building of high quality addressing this landscape which will in time become a new regional park. In addition the buildings strive to set high environmental standards of energy efficiency, sustainability and the innovative use of timber to create the best working environment for staff. All aspects of the building have been designed, from the arrangement of the large vehicular services yard to the design of the furniture. In this project, things often overlooked in utilitarian municipal buildings have become part of the overall high quality of the total design solution.
The project now nearing completion is the synthesis of a close and creative working process between a public and a private architectural practice. The project design up to planning stage was by the Architects Department of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. This design has been developed post planning in a collaborative manner with Bucholz McEvoy Architects, into a timber framed naturally ventilated building with purpose designed furniture. A clear example of how the public and private sectors can work together combining clear architectural direction from a client perspective with a highly innovative technical and architectural solution.
