FIRST EXHIBITION OF IRISH ARCHITECTURE IN CENTRAL EUROPE

Irish architecture will be shown for the first time in Central Europe when the 2009 AAI Awards exhibition opens at the Architecture Centre in Brno on 28 April. The exhibition, which runs until 4 June 2010, and an associated lecture series are supported by Culture Ireland. Brno, the second city of the Czech Republic, is home to one of the most important icons of 20th-century modernism, Mies van der Rohe's Villa Tugendhat of 1930.
The lecture series will take place at the Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology.
28 April: Shane O'Toole: 'Designing for Democracy: Ireland's Civic Architecture, 1994-2009'
11 May: Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey of O'Donnel + Tuomey Architects: 'Recent Work'
3 June: Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara of Grafton Architects: 'Anchor and Animation'
Grafton Architects won the 2009 Downes Medal for Universita Luigi Bocconi, Milan and an AAI special award for the Department of Finance extension in Merrion Row. O'Donnell + Tuomey received an AAI special award for the Sean O'Casey Community Centre in Dublin's East Wall.
