Site Visit: East wing, Castletown House. OPW Architects

AAI Site Visit: Celbridge, Co. Kildare. April 9 2011, 11:00am

Saturday, 9th April 2011

11:00am

Please note, all visitors will be asked to provide their own PPE and to sign in.

In 1994 responsibility for the care of Castletown House passed on to the State. The OPW embarked on a programme of conservation works and acquisitions, focusing initially on the conservation of external fabric and historic interiors.

From 2006 an extensive programme of conservation works commenced, facilitating a lively events programme and encouraging more people to visit and enjoy the house and grounds.

The aim of this project is to restore the East Wing of Castletown House for public use incidental to Main House. This will enable public access to the restored historic Stables on the ground floor and the restored Long Room and reinstated Billiard Room on the first floor. The new quadrant extension will provide both a link to the main house and accommodate an escape staircase.

The East Wing and East Yard will also be used as an event centre and exhibition space .
