Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems

This February, ILI is organising a two day training workshop in Dublin in sustainable drainage systems.
Course Tutor: Robert Bray, Robert Bray Associates.
Recent years have seen unprecedented flood damage in Dublin, Cork and other parts of the country. A single flooding event in urban areas (Cork in 2009, Dublin in 2011) costs €35-50 milion in repair work. The use of SuDS to manage surface water run-off is now required under national policy.
Sustainable Drainage is an environmentally friendly way of dealing with surface water runoff which avoids the problems associated with conventional drainage practice. Conventional drainage exacerbates flooding, causes pollution and is generally more expensive to install and to maintain than Sustainable Drainage schemes. The Environment Agency in the UK advocates Sustainable Drainage schemes because they do not contribute to flooding, they encourage wildlife and provide visually attractive, and educational, amenities in the form of wetland habitat which is increasingly under threat in the UK.
This intensive course will cover the background, principles and maintenance of SuDS systems and will include a site visit on day 2.
The course will be of interest to landscape architects, engineers, architects, planners, environmental consultants.

'Untitled' seeks to capture the range of architectural research being conducted on the island of Ireland. Proposals were invited for analytical & interpretative papers from postgraduate students, academics & practitioners involved in the field of architectural research in Ireland.
The Conference in gathering this wide range of theory and practice will provide a foundation from which further research in architecture
will be encouraged while providing a shop window for possible future collaboration.
Anyone registering an interest can send an email to Noel.Brady@dit.ie before 10 pm on Wednesday 18.01.12 The fee is €50 and will be collected on the day of the conference.

CCoI/IAF Competition: CRAFTITECTURE - A Pavilion for Electric Picnic’

National Association of Women in Construction, now 2 years old in Ireland, are launching a new independent website.
Residencies at Cill Rialaig
The Cill Rialaig Project in SW Kerry invites applications for residencies for Sept 2011-Dec 2012.
Residencies are offered free of charge, although there is a small service fee for utilities. Residents provide their own transportation, food and supplies. The selection committee meets twice a year, and the next deadline for applications is March 15, 2011. The following deadline is September 15, 2011.

Slow - architecture and sustainability
SARC –an architectural research collective - is looking for expressions of interest in the participation in a canal-based travelling educational programme on the above theme to take place on the Barrow Navigation travelling from Monasterevin to Waterford from May to July 2011.
Selected participants will be asked to develop the theme of Slow – architecture and sustainability in relationship to a project and the process of design. Participants should have the enthusiasm and experience to communicate their project as part of a teaching process to schoolchildren.
Expressions of Interest should take the form of a written document of not more than 300 words with accompanying illustrations and clearly demonstrate your intended response and method of communicating to a younger generation.

Engaging with Architecture Scheme launched
he Arts Council and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government have launched a new scheme with the purpose of engaging the public with architecture. The Engaging with Architecture Scheme was developed as a partnership initiative in response to both the Government Policy on Architecture 2009 - 2015 Towards a Sustainable Future: Delivering Quality within the Built Environment and the Arts Council's research into Public Engagement with Architecture (2009). The closing date for applications is Thursday 16 September 2010 and projects must take place before the end of August 2011.

Work & Study in Japan
Vulcanus in Japan is a programme that consists of work placements for EU students. It starts in September and ends in August of the following year. The students follow a one-week seminar on Japan, a four-month intensive Japanese language course, and then an eight-month traineeship in a Japanese company. Previous students have done traineeships with Architecture studios such as Suo Fujimoto, Sendai+ Kobe, and NKS Architects. The European students are awarded a grant (Yen 2.000.000) to cover the cost of travel to and from Japan and living expenses in Japan. There is no charge for the language course and seminar, and accommodation is provided free of charge during the course and seminar and the company traineeship.
While Part I and Part II students can avail of this it is also worth mentioning that Part III students with UCD can also participate. The deadline for application is in January of each year.

Desmond Guinness Scholarship
The Desmond Guinness Scholarship is awarded annually by the Irish Georgian Society to an applicant or applicants, either resident in Ireland or registered for a degree in Ireland, engaged in research on the visual arts in Ireland including the work of Irish architects, artists and craftsmen at home and abroad, 1600-1900. Preference will be given to work based on original documentary research.
The Scholarship is intended primarily for applicants who are not yet established at an advanced professional level in research or publication of the visual arts.
The Scholarship does not have to be awarded in any one year, and the decision of the assessors, appointed by the Irish Georgian Society, is final.
The total value of the scholarship fund available for distribution in 2009 is in the region of €1,200.00
Applications must be submitted by Friday 8th January 2010
