“Some of the most interesting discussions taking place in the present time concern the relationship between humans and nature. With few exceptions architects have been slow on the uptake. For several decades the city has defined the context and the limits of architecture. Increasingly the context encompasses everything that is not human, namely nature in which the city is a meaningful but relatively small part. How can architects address this expanded context not merely defensively (for instance in reducing CO2 emissions) but in creative ways? ”
Irénée Scalbert will present the AAI Annual Critic’s lecture for 2017 before chairing the jury of the AAI Annual Awards 2017.
Irénée Scalbert is an architectural critic based in London. He is a Visiting Professor at the Politecnico in Milan and a lecturer at SAUL in Ireland. He has taught at the Architectural Association for many years, last as coordinator of the undergraduate History and Theory programme, and he is a member of the editorial board of AA Files. He has been a Visiting Design Critic at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard and a Visiting Professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture, Paris-Malaquais. He has contributed essays to architectural magazines on a wide range of historical and contemporary issues. He is the author of A Right to Difference: The Architecture of Jean Renaudie (2004) and Never Modern (2013).
