Congratulations to all whose projects were among those selected by this year’s jury.
Awards were given to six projects.
University buildings on opposite sides of the globe: In the Punjab, India, where sculptural forms of red sandstone rise as extensions of the earth to house spaces of learning, and in Kingston, just outside London, where a colonnade becomes a mechanism for social interaction and connection between university activities and the local community.
Two rural houses of distinctive character: One a composition of staggered red roofs, rainwater elements and concrete buttresses, the other a pedimented monolith defined by a single oculus overlooking an adjacent ring-fort.
Two further dwellings: A topographical house that integrates the social patterns of everyday domestic life into the immediate and wider landscapes, and a transformative reorganisation of Victorian red-brick living anchored by a single column and the elegant extrapolation of the language of the bay window.
Six special mentions were also given.
Two for different aspects of Cork student life; Accommodation blocks with formal facades connected by glazed bridges and brick courtyards on a tight riverside site in the city’s medieval core, and a precise and sympathetic extension to an historic building at the heart of UCC’s distinctive campus, identified by a bronze lantern tower, that provides a new home for student facilities.
Elsewhere, extensions to two schools were chosen – a national school on the edge of Galway that activates a neglected space to create a new entrance with canopies, play shelters, and ball walls, and a post-primary school in Louth that uses an extended eaves detail and gestures of roof and form to reinforce a civic identity. In Dublin, two different residences – a terraced rear extension; a study in brick detailing and the richness of hand-crafted character, and a courtyard house of raw materiality and surprising generosity, its form generated from the constraints of its backlands context.
