D x 3 is a series of talks and panel discussions organised by the Architectural Association of Ireland (AAI) on the topic of Dublin city. Each is based on a single, overarching theme: Character, Community, and Culture. These three themes will be linked to three questions which seek to identify the issues that are shaping the city, examine the reasons why and how these concerns have emerged, and explore alternative models that might offer a more equitable future. They may be summarised as follows:

Each event will feature four speakers who have been invited due to their knowledge of Dublin and expertise on issues which affect the city. Speakers will present three slides over a three minute period on a subject (or subjects) of their choice. Following these short presentations, the topics raised will provide a number of talking points for subsequent discussion between both panellists and attendees.
For the Character edition of this series, the AAI is delighted to announce the following speakers/panellists:
Donal Fallon
Donal Fallon is a historian, writer, and broadcaster in Dublin. He is a former Historian in Residence to Dublin City Council and lectures with the Lifelong Learning department of University College Dublin. He produces the Three Castles Burning social history podcast.
Lynn Ruane
Senator Lynn Ruane is an independent member of Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Irish Parliament. Her legislative priorities since her election in 2016 have focused on equality of access in education, gender equality and reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, and advocating for progressive reforms of drug, migration, and social welfare policies. Prior to her entry to politics, she developed addiction programmes for fifteen years as a community worker in west Dublin. She is the author of the award-winning memoir, People Like Me.
Bernadette Quinn
Dr Bernadette Quinn is a senior lecturer at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). She has written extensively about arts festivals, being interested in the roles that they play in transforming space, reproducing place, and shaping identities. Heritage studies and gender issues are further interests. She has held external examining roles at a number of third level institutions in Ireland, UK, Norway, and Australia. Bernadette sits on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events. She is widely published in international tourism, urban studies and geography journals and edited collections. Currently, she is the Irish Principal Investigator on a Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) funded research project on festivals, events and inclusive public spaces.
Cian O’Callaghan
Cian O’Callaghan is an urban and cultural geographer and Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography Trinity College Dublin. He holds a PhD in Geography from University College Cork and has previously worked in Maynooth University. His recent research has focused on the impacts of Ireland’s property crash on the built environment and society, and on the transformations taking place in the post-crisis city, particularly in relation to contestations over the meaning and use of vacant spaces. He is currently the PI on the IRC-funded COALESCE project Rethinking Urban Vacancy: Addressing the challenge of underutilised land through innovative policy solutions.
