The AAI are really excited to host a site visit to Ballyoughteragh South with Brock Finucane Architects
Perched on the rugged headland of Ceann Sibéal, Kerry, the house sits low and grounded, hunkering into the landscape as a shield against the Atlantic weather. This project re-examines the Irish rural bungalow as a cultural and spatial typology. It involved the disassembly of the typological plan of the existing house and reconfiguration into a series of fluid, interwoven spaces that both shelter from, and frame the unique landscape in which it sits. The volume is opened strategically to allow the shifting light to pour in, framing endless skies and the restless ocean. It’s intended to be a quiet, elemental dwelling, deferential to the landscape on which it sits.

Architects’ Statement:
Brock Finucane is an architectural practice engaged in design, research, and education, led by Nicci Brock and Ruairi Finucane.
The practice undertakes cultural, infrastructural, strategic, and residential projects across Ireland and beyond. The work is grounded on the interrogation and investigation of the physical, social, historic, economic and legislative frameworks of place – a methodology that is framed by a sensitivity to context, culture, and the environment.
Nicci Brock has taught at CCAE and UCD, where she is currently a Design Fellow. She has also contributed as a guest critic and lecturer at QUB, SAUL, CCAE, and TUD. Ruairi Finucane has taught at CCAE and UCD, where he is currently a Teaching Fellow, specialising in Professional Practice. He has served as a guest critic and contributor at SAUL and CCAE.
