Through reference and image, Thomas O’Brien (t o b architect) and David Leech (David Leech Architects) will present a joint talk, paired and discursive in nature. Each responding to content produced by the other, both architects will discuss the testing of ideas, first steps into practice, and the influences that have shaped their work.

Thomas O’Brien

t o b Architect is an architectural practice based in Dublin, Ireland. It was established in 2013 by Thomas O’Brien. Each project builds on the tradition of a critical architecture that evokes aesthetic experience and satisfies the senses. The practice’s work is referential to history, typology, environmental and contextual prompts.

Thomas O’Brien studied architecture at University College Dublin, graduating in 2005. Since graduation, Thomas has worked for de Paor Architects, A2 Architects, and Dorman Architects, and worked on a range of projects from educational buildings, interior fit outs, domestic extensions and new builds. Thomas is currently a studio tutor at UCD.

David Leech

David Leech Architects is an architectural practice established in 2016 by David Leech after thirteen years working in several European offices, including Herzog de Meuron in Basel, Caruso St John Architects and 6a Architects in London, and dePaor Architects and Grafton Architects in Dublin. The practice has recently completed its first built projects, a small conservatory room and a house in a garden in Dublin. The studio has been awarded several prizes for its first works including the World Architecture Festival House of the Year and an Arts Council Bursary grant in 2018.

Current projects in the studio include a coastal house in West Cork, a warehouse refurbishment and extension in Shoreditch, a house within a house in Hampstead, and a house for an engineer in Walthamstow. However with a new housing development under design in Dublin the practice hopes to move towards more public and larger scale city building. David has lectured in the UK and in Europe and will talk on the work of the practice as part of the Architecture Foundation’s Architecture on Stage series in June 2019. The practice has been invited to exhibit their most recent project, a house for an engineer, at the Trienal de Arquitectura de Lisboa in October 2019.
