McCullough Mulvin Architects was founded in 1986 by Niall McCullough and Valerie Mulvin. Their award winning works include cultural projects, civic buildings, residential work and libraries for public and academic use. Through publication, on typologies (A Lost Tradition), the process of change (Palimpsest) and then on the city (Dublin: An Urban History) McCullough Mulvin have explored the context of architecture in Ireland.

The AAI visited McCullogh Mulvin’s project for a third level college in Blackrock Co. Dublin incorporating the Town Hall, Canrnegie library and VEC school, a fine composition of 1860 and 1905 buildings, all Protected Structures. An L-shaped addition, which completes an implicit urban block, creates two planimetrically equvalent but spatially distinct courtyards – one glazed, one open.
