The site is locked between two row housing blocks and was occupied by a former signage manufacturing warehouse with an interesting front stone façade which has been kept and restored. The site constraints, with no possibility of creating openings on three sides due to overlooking and its immediate proximity to the lane, lead to an introverted solution using a circular patio as a device for spatial organisation, natural light, ventilation and acoustic buffer. The project, a 3-bedroom family house, is then organised in a “U” shape plan around this new large south facing internal garden which all rooms look onto. Very much like the Moroccan “Riad” typology, a strong contrast is made between the austere stone facade on the outside and a soft and delicate timber one on the inside, creating an isolated, quiet and peaceful world. The garden is literally and philosophically, the heart of the house.
