The AAI are finishing up the site visits for the calendar year with two projects with TOB architect in Tipperary.
Meeting Point: Rock House, Saint Patricksrock, Cashel, Co. Tipperary, E25 NY74.
House 1: Bohereen Bocht followed by short transit to House no. 2 Fethard
Description:
The tour will be of two houses, the first in Cashel, and the second in Fethard Co. Tipperary. The former is constructed in monolithic clay block walls and the latter in timber frame. While both houses demonstrate an interest in reference, composition, materials, ecology (where things come from), the differing sites, people involved, budgets, materials and associated construction techniques, also drive the project and must be accommodated, resulting in two very different houses.
Architect’s Statement:
TOB Architect is an explorative, critical architectural practice based in Dublin, and Tipperary, Ireland. It was founded by Thomas O Brien in 2013 and since then has earned a reputation as an expansive practice that incorporates an ongoing examination of the nature of things and places into each project.
The practice has been recognised domestically and internationally, receiving an Architectural Association Award in 2019 for Killan Farmhouse, and in 2022 for The Quay. The practice was shortlisted for the international Architectural Review Emerging Architect prize in 2018. TOB Architect was also nominated for an EU Mies Award 2022 for Killan Farmhouse.
A continuing level of excellence in the built work of the practice is recognised by international exhibition and publication in printed and online media, most recently in A&U 2024/03, Irish Architecture, Twenty Houses by 6 Architects.
