AAI [Virtual] Site Visits: The Sorting Office & Ropemaker Place
7pm 10th March 2022 @ Zoom
The Sorting Office & Ropemaker Place will be presented by Richard Doorly and Claire Pierce of Henry J Lyons, with Bernard Seymour of BSLA.
Ropemaker Place forms part of a mixed-use regeneration project for Marlet Property Group that also includes the Sorting Office to the East and One Lime Street and the Shipping office to its west. The urban design strategy was to create thin blocks with inner courtyards and soft graduated ecological edges to mitigate flood levels. A new pedestrian street divides the site and the ambition is that this new route might eventually reach through to connect to the adjacent privately-owned Whitaker Square. Facing south onto Hanover Street East, a six to seven-story L-shaped form completes a courtyard with existing housing at Ropemaker Place and includes fifty-six light-filled apartments above a retail ground-level of 180 sq m (1,950sq ft) and a parking podium.
The Sorting Office is located on the former site of the large distribution centre for An Post, from which it gets its name. As a seven-story-above-basement high-performance office, it has restored streetlife in a hitherto derelict industrial area. In contrast to the jagged edges of adjoining buildings by Grand Canal Dock, the calm elegance of the splayed south-east facing corner at the junction of Cardiff Lane and Hanover Street East reaches beyond the site to establish a vital set piece for its Dublin streetscape.
A Zoom link will be distributed an hour prior to the event. This will be sent to the email used when registering for the event.
